The Sound of Music

It is the most successful American film musical and it was filmed in Salzburg and Mondsee. “The Sound of Music,” directed by Robert Wise, was shown in cinemas exactly 50 years ago and became a worldwide success. This year, “The Sound of Music” is celebrating its 50th anniversary and we are celebrating with them. Come with us to the original filming locations in Salzburger Land and immerse yourself in the world of the Trapp family, whose life is inextricably linked to the city of Salzburg.

A huge success - known throughout the world

Every year, around 300,000 people visit the film locations from the film “The Sound of Music.”  The film was shot in 1964 after the huge success of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical in 1959. Both the musical and the film are based on the book, "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers" by Maria Trapp. The dramatic life of the novice Maria von Trapp and her singing family became a worldwide success due to the screen adaptation in 1965, with Julie Andrews playing the lead role. The songs from the film "The Sound of Music" are famous the world over.
