It is world famous, popular and well visited. The birth city of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is only a 20 minute drive from the Mondsee and welcomes you with art, culture and many sights to see. Mozart chocolates, Mozart rubber ducks, Mozart ice cream: there is nearly nothing without the portrait of the great son of the city on it. One of the most popular museums in Austria is Mozart’s birth house in the Getreidegasse. Numerous originals, portraits and a reconstructed townsman’s apartment invite you to travel back to the 18th century.
My Artistic and Cultural Experience
The Mozart City of Salzburg
Centre of art and culture
Start your cultural journey through Salzburg in Schloss Mirabell - the marble hall in the castle is world famous. Then stroll straight to the Baroque Mirabell-Lustgarten (Mirabell gardens) in the city centre. In the actual cultural highlight of the city, the Domquartier, you will be amazed by the splendour and art. In the cathedral square you can walk in the tracks of the “Jedermann” (Everyman), whilst you take a look at the Salzburg Fortress. Learn about the imposing fortified castle, which towers high above the city and enjoy the unique 360° panorama. At the House of Nature, there is a lot to see and do for both children and adults, then just do some shopping in the Getreidegasse before you decide to call it a day.
Summer Highlight - The Salzburg Festival
From the 21st of July to the 30th of August, the city of Salzburg is once again transformed into the cultural centre of the world. The new director Markus Hinterhäuser is a breath of fresh air for the Salzburg Festival. Some changes, amongst others, the world famous “Jedermann” play, is already causing a stir. Look forward to four plays and five opera productions. Among them a Mozart opera with an original ensemble. Furthermore “Aida” by Guiseppe Verdi will also be performed. The director snapped up the successful couple: Riccardo Muti am Opernpult and Anna Netrebko for this performance. Bettina Hering is the new Theatre Manager of the Salzburg Festival.
Something a bit further out, but definitely worth a visit
In the south of the city are many more excursion highlights and sights to see, which should not be missed. At Salzburg Zoo, you can marvel at over 400 local and exotic animals. At Hellbrunn zoo, the living quarters of the animals have been recreated appropriate to the species. Next to here is Castle Hellbrunn and the playful water fountains. The castle is an attraction all year round, the water fountains are especially fun on a hot summer days. Hangar-7 is not a conventional tourist attraction in Salzburg. It is a mixture between event location, aeroplane museum and home to top international chefs. Enjoy the unique atmosphere, experience top gastronomy and look out through the imposing glass.
